A Flow Master in Disaster With a Sound That's Gone" - Adam Yauch

I cannot claim to be the hugest of Beastie Boys fans, but have some really great memories attached to them, and absolutely cannot deny that they are one of the
MOST influential hip-hop groups ever, combining punk and hip-hop and making it a mainstream force, this is a fact.So the news that Adam Yauch aka MCA lost his battle with cancer really saddens me. He was a musician,an icon, a humanitarian, and an educator, encouraging us to“Fight for our rights”. RIP MCA.

"Yauch was not only a musical pioneer with Beasties; he was an activist and humanitarian. When he converted from Judaism to Buddhism, he founded the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness to injustices on native Tibetans by the Chinese government and military forces. He then organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts that started in 1996 and raised awareness with Live Aid style gigs in various cities around the world. In 1999, Beastie Boys along with Rage Against the Machine, staged a concert to raise money and awareness for incarcerated death-row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal. In the wake of September 11, Milarepa and Beastie's staged a relief concert with proceeds going to New York Women's Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA). Last fall, Yauch marched with Occupy Wall Street across the Brooklyn Bridge to raise awareness from the greed of big banks. Wherever there was injustice, there was Yauch, wherever there was a voice to be given to the voiceless, there was Yauch."

As a kid growing up in Winston-Salem...grunge was king and gangsta rap was all over the news, Beastie Boys were a breath of fresh air during the years of a massive, angst-filled sound. They taught us how to have fun, they taught us how to be ourselves and most of all, they taught us how to be "ill."

With roots in hardcore and punk, the trio tried hip-hop and made a career out of it, for some, including myself; it was our first exposure to something so urban. What once was a genre that did not belong to anyone that did not live in a major city became accessible. While they made their mark with their music, they also made their name with remarkable music videos. Never afraid to make fools out of themselves and showcase how much fun this business should be, Beastie Boys were innovators in the music video genre. Some of their most celebrated videos, "So Whatcha Want," "Intergalactic," "Body Movin" and "Ch-Check It Out," were directed by Yauch under the alias, Nathaniel Hornblower.

***They were much more than rappers, they were much more than musicians, they were innovators that evolved far beyond the years they were together. After all, a group like Beastie Boys could only come from a place as diverse as New York City. In the late-90's the trio started Capitol Records imprint, Grand Royal, which signed left-of-the-center artists At The Drive-In, Atari Teenage Riot, Ben Lee, Luscious Jackson, Mr. Lif and many others. Nearly any band that has formed in the last twenty years owes a debt to Beastie Boys.***

And WOW..."In a life as rich and fulfilled as Yauch's, when he announced his cancer diagnosis to the world via a YouTube video in the summer of 2009, there was a collective sigh in the music world. When the news broke that he was too sick to attend last month's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, there was a collective disappointment. As word got out on Friday May 4, 2012, they he had passed away, the sigh that everyone displayed three years ago turned to tears. We can all learn a lesson on how to live from Yauch -- live the life you want to have and do what you want to do because in the end you will leave with no regrets."

This is a lesson for all of us to learn! Seriously people... live the life you want to have and do what you want to do because in the end you will leave with no regrets." That is how I want to be able to leave this earth!

Thank you for your service to us Adam aka MCA, your music and the life you lived will live on for all of us.

Note from Sumer:
Noel recently joined our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ in Glory land...but his music will live on and be a legacy for his children. This event we are having on March 3rd 2012 will be to start trust funds for his children with all proceeds.

We plan to have an awesome night of Noel's music along with many of our friends in the local music scene singing tributes to Noel and friends telling about his life and of course the Noel Livengood band playing the new CD!

Noel wanted to sell CD's, but most of all Noel wanted to simply "sell a song to Nashville" :) I plan to make that dream come true #1 for Noel, because I love him & want to make his dream happen, but #2 and most important to provide a secure future for his children and a legacy of life, love and music from their father.

Thank you all for being apart of this legacy for Noel!

Rock'n Roll is the new Rock'n Roll!!! Tommy Jones and the Serkess!

ARTIST BIO

"It's taken Grammy award winning songwriters and hit crafters to make this band," Says Tommy Jones -the lead singer and driving force of the bands material, " I grew up with country music hall of famers and contracted rock song writers that shaped every idea I have. This music is the music they raised me to bring to you."
The Serkess has been described as Rock and Roll rooted. They are at the forefront of the non-genre rock revival. There is obvious country style hook writing, soul style arrangement , old school r and b brashness, a big melodic pop feeling and sheer fire to their sound.
"While my Father was writing songs for Buck Owens- his band was performing Roy Orbison. Good music was good music to him. Music is a feeling. Not how you dress. That is the message of our band." Says Jones.
Tommy Jones (born in Sacramento California) has always lived as a working performer. By age five he was a regular on the "Easy living Country" television show, a radio performer with the Southern Empire band and a published song writer.
"In the five years prior to my birth my Father had a capitol records contract and a mild hit- my Mother was a prominent demo vocalist in Nashville, my Grandfather had founded the Western Swing society and all of them were Television and radio celebrities. I never stumbled onto music. It was how we lived."
Performing with country ,rock and jazz legends -Jones began playing piano to create a foundation to the songs he was beginning to write with award winning song writers 20,30 sometimes 50 years his senior. His show stopping performances at Jazz Festivals became highlights of the Western Swing concerts and gained much notoriety on the Festival circuits. As a teenager Tommy began to focus on the craft of song writing itself.
"By 15 many artists had recorded my music. I wasn't aiming for a melded sound. I wanted to work with established performers in many musical fields as a challenge to myself. I was stumbling on to what makes music, lyrics and melody universal. Why some music crosses every bridge and some music doesn't.”
It was this lesson that became his life obsession. As music continued to create new genre's to pin point demographics, Jones continued to focus on the things that made great music the same.Tommy moved to North Carolina and created relationships with writers from Nashville to New York. While writing a song for an emerging artists album in New York-he found the sound that combined his life's work and the work of the legends he had grown up with.
"I was writing a song- fall (featured on the upcoming album "Playing with Fire" Tommy Jones and the Serkess' first effort) I was writing for an Americana/ country project- but what I realized is that I had put all of my influences into the same song. I couldn’t pitch it as a country song because it wasn’t but it wasn’t a pop song or an r and b song. It was all those things. That, to me, is Rock N Roll. Everything- anything- it doesn't need three other genres."
Jones decided immediately to form the right band to create his vision.
"I needed a group as diverse as myself." He says, “I have a metal rhythm section and a cut throat guitar section. Yet I write all the arrangements on the piano...and basically country influenced lyrics. It's new... because it isn’t being done anymore. Rock N roll is the new Rock N roll.
Playing with Fire
From the album comes a canvas of well used influences. Shades of giant 60's ballads explode into heavy rock. Driving guitar riffs accompany melodic soul influenced vocals. Hints of Rock Theater can be found- but careful to never alienate. It sounds cutting edge. But it never hides its roots. The music is a celebration of master song writing. It is influenced by the heavy weights of every style and actively blends familiar formulas without ever copying it. They are melodic. They are heavy. They are head nodding... they are fire.
"This band- The Serkess is my dream band. It's many, many, many styles. But only one type of music. Rock n Roll. I want you to put this music on in 20 years and not just remember where you were, but have it matter in that moment too. That’s when it lasts forever. "
Tommy Jones has, for a long time, been known as a tireless performer. His marathon level energy is only matched by his musical quality. With the Serkess (Joey Muscles lead guitar- Mahlon Murder - guitar, the BIZ drums- the M -bass,) you get a true rock experience. A brand new revival. BIZ and The M keep beats steady and methodical sometimes, crescendoing into pure panic. Mahlon Murder glues the musical landscape with powerhouse rhythm guitar. And Joey Muscles is a devastating force of shred. They are music lovers. And their fans are music lovers as well.
"We create music for people that love music. Not for people who dress a certain way- wear certain shoes- or that fall in a specific demographic. It’s for people that love hard working music. We give our all."
There is no doubt that crowds are flocking to the essence of rock music again. Jones has trained his whole life for that moment. For their fans- they know that moment is here. For more info visit www.mooch1music.com
